If you live in Malaysia, then you probably have heard of a few famous Malaysian horror movies. There is even a movie named after a location in Malaysia, Keramat. However, don’t be confused between the movie Keramat and the location in Malaysia, Keramat. If you haven’t found a good quality Malaysian horror movie, here are a few good suggestions:
1. Munafik (2017)
Munafik follows the story of Adam, a pious medical practitioner, played by Syamsul Yusof, who is struggling to cope with grief after the death of his wife in an accident. He meets Maria, played by Nabila Huda, shortly after, who is depressed. When she is possessed by an evil spirit, Adam uses his skills to help her, but weird things begin to happen when he learns that Maria is connected to the accident that killed his wife. Munafik gained great recognition both in the United States and abroad. At the 7th Asia Pacific Film Festival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Syamsul won the Best Director prize.
2. Dukun (2018)
When horror films are accompanied by the phrase “inspired by true events,” they become considerably scary. While Dukun is only partly inspired by the terrifying serial killer Mona Fandey, the film has Malaysians shivering with excitement, with horror movie fans anxious to see the controversial picture. Karim, played by Faizal Hussein, is a public defence for witch doctor Diana Dahlan, played by Umie Aida, in the film Dukun. Diana is accused of killing a high-profile businessman, Datuk Jeffrey, during one of their ceremonies. The secrets and crimes of Diana’s sinister past begin to emerge amid all the mayhem in the movie.
3. Khurafat: Perjanjian Syaitan (2011)
Khurafat is directed by Syamsul Yusof, who also directed Munafik, so you know you’re in for a frightening treat. This film also features Syamsul, who plays Johan, the protagonist. Johan and Aishah, who is played by Liyana Jasmay, are a loving couple. All of that comes crashing down when Johan’s ex-girlfriend, Anna, played by Sabrina Ali, wrecks the marriage in an attempt to reclaim him. The pair strives to combat their hardships together, despite the sudden entrance of a mysterious old lady and numerous unsettling happenings.

4. Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam (2004)
Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam was a box office success when it was initially released, and Maya Karin, who played Meriam, the pontianak, is still remembered for her part in the film. Meriam, a gorgeous prima donna who won the hearts of many while she was still alive, is the subject of the film. She was stabbed in the stomach while pregnant, however, and has since transformed into a restless ghost intent on tormenting those who murdered her.
5. Histeria (2008)
Histeria is a psychological horror movie set in a dorm room at a prestigious institution. The movie begins with seven rebellious girls feigning hysteria to the point where a shaman is summoned for an exorcism rite. As a punishment for being called out, the girls must spring-clean the dorms during the holiday season. As the girls are slain one by one in terrible ways by a terrifying monster, a peaceful and empty dormitory building is certainly a good location for scary happenings.
